Interview with Charlie @ Goldman Sachs, job second year analyst.

Note: The interviewed party asked to remain anonymous so we have used Charlie as a ficticious name.

1.Max Pen: How did you do in high school? Did your parents influence you?

Charlie: Highschool was fine; I chose my own career path

2.Max Pen: What exactly does a second year analyst do?

Charlie: Basically I am the slave of the firm; I do all the work that the managing director of my division doesn’t want to do. So for example, I’ll work on excel spreadsheets and financial models for 15 hours a day on the computer.

3.Max Pen: What are your plans for the future? Promotions, etc

Charlie: Two years of investment banking analyst, business school, then hopefully private equity.

4.Max Pen:  What does “private equity” mean?

Charlie: Buying majority shares in startup companies and helping them to grow as investments. Ideally making large margins of profit on the principle investment.

5.Max Pen: Did you know as a teenager (13+ years) that you were going to end up in this field?

Charlie: No, I knew nothing about investment banking at the age of 13.

6.Max Pen: Is there a lot of competition amongst banks companies?

Charlie: It’s probably the most competitive business there is.

7.Max Pen:  Why? What makes it so idealistic to work in that sector?

Charlie: Money, lucrative compensation packages.

8.Max Pen: Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

Charlie: As I said before, private equity ideally.

9.Max Pen: Does the lack of free time bug you?

Charlie: It obviously is hard and frustrating at times not being able to see friends when I want to, but they understand the circumstances

10.Max Pen: Can you switch jobs? Did you study for an extra job function?

Charlie: Since investment banking is as competitive as it gets, it would not be very difficult for me to switch to another profession if I really wanted to. Such as: consulting, law, etc

11.Max Pen: What are your favorite movies?

Charlie:  2001 a space odyssey, braveheart, pulp fiction, Black hawk down to name a few. That’s a hard question, and my answer changes depending on  my mood.

12.Max Pen: Do you have any pets, if so what are there names?

Charlie:  No, I had a dog but it died

Thanks a lot for wanting to be interviewed by us Charlie. We wish you the best of luck in the future.

Hey to all readers, this is our first interview posted here and also the first one to be done with a person.
